( INCIDENTS CONNECTED TO REVELATIONS)
* "Let Me Alone to deal with whom I created alone.And then granted him resources in abundance.And children to be
by his side!And made life smooth and comfortable for him!Yet is he greedy-that I should give him more;
Nay!Verily,he has been stubborn and opposing Our proofs."[74:11-16].
About whom were these verses revealed,and to which incident they are related?
** Al-Waleed Ibnul Mugheera,a pagan chief of the Makhzam tribe.He was wealthy and had many children.When he
heard the Qur'an,he said:"By Allah this is
neither poetry,nor magic,nor does it come from a crazy man.It is only the words of Allah".But Abu Jahal kept
talking to him until he reneged and said:"This is nothing but magic, derived from that of old".
* "And He(Allah)did forgive also the three whom the Prophet left(i.e. did not decide in their case),till for them the
earth,vast as it is,was strained and their own selves were strained to them, and they perceived thar there is no
fleeing fromAllah,and no refuge but with Him. Then he accepted their repentence, that they might repent unto
Him."[9:118].
Who were these three men and what sin did they commit?
** Ka'b ibn Malik, Maraarah ibn Rabee' al-Aamiri, and Hilaal ibn Umayyah al-Waaqifee. They stayed behind
Madinah during the battle of Tabuk. They were shunned by the Muslims untill Allah revealed these verses
accepting their repentence.
* " O you who believe ! Why do you say that which you do not do? Most hateful it is with Allah that you say that
which you do not do." [61:2,3]
What is the incident after which these verses were revealed?
** Ibn Abbas said: "People from the believers used to say before jihad was decreed,"We wished that Allah'azza wa
jalla would guide us to the best of deeds so that we would perform it." So when Allah(swt) informed His
Messenger(pbuh) of the duty of jihad,some of them disliked it and found it unbearable, so Allah revealed these
verses."
* " Say : O you that reject faith ! I worship not that which you worship, nor will you worship that which I worship. And
I will not worship that which you are worshipping. Nor will you worship that which I worship. To you be your
religion, and to me my religion." [surat 109]
During which incident this surah was revealed?
** The disbelievers of Quraish have suggested to the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam to worship his God Allah
for one year provided that he worshipped their gods for one year,so Allah revealed these verses.
* " Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he! His wealth and his children will not benefit him. Burnt soon
will he be in fire of blazing flames !" [111:1-3]
Who was Abu Lahab, and what was the incident connected to these verses?
** He was an uncle of the Prophet sallahu alayhe wa sallam, who was adamantly against him. The Prophet
ascended one day on a mount in Makkah to call people to islam, and said :" If I told you that the enemy is
attacking you this morning or this evening would you believe me?"
They said yes, so he said : " Then I am a Warner for you, about a great punishment !" Abu Lahab said: " Perish
you ! Did you gather us to tell us this?!" So Allah revealed surah 111
* " The Peophet frowned and turned away,because there came to him the blind man. And what could tell you,that he
might become pure? Or that he might receive admonition,and the admonition might profit him?" [80:1-4]
Who was the blind man, and after which event was these verses revealed?
** The blind man was Abdallah ibn Umm Maktum,who was also among the poor. The Prophet sallahu alayhe wa
sallam was deeply engaged in explaining some of the Quran to a pagan Quraishi leader, hoping to convert him to
Islam,when he was interrupted by the blind man, who kept asking questions. The Prophet (pbuh) disliked the
interruption and turned away from him. Allah revealed these verses as a reminder,and the Prophet afterwards held
ibn Umm Maktum in high
honour.
